“…a human, and a miko, no less… Are you yet another newcomer to Gensokyo, or are you some new recruit to the existing shrines? And who is your patron deity?”
“Is that right…” Miko murmured, thinking for a moment. Decisions were fine by her; after all, she had been in a position where she was left to make a fair many in her past life, and important ones at that. “I’ve yet to go to the Youkai Mountain where Miss Yasaka’s shrine resides, so there might be a good place to start, if any,” she said.
“The mountain will suffice as a fine destination.” In truth, she’d read very little about it, and as such, elected to retrieve a thick, untitled tome and pen before flitting to Miko’s side. “Then, when you are ready, I suppose.”
“Nothing too big, hopefully. Just to summon storms of varying strengths. I thank you for your warning as well, but relocation shouldn’t be necessary.”
“Of course… that much will be… ah, this way.” She hurried own a few shelves before leading Kanako into the maze, though it was a shortly-lived trip before they arrived at the appropriate sect. “This should have everything you might need for such a purpose. Please let me know if you require anything else.”
“What.. What is your meaning here, if I might ask..?” Tojiko queried, though narrowed her eyes to concentrate a bit more on the book in hand, still trying to dispel her other thoughts.
“…I am not certain that I understand the question.” Did the ghost mean her comment about her concern upon noting missing tomes, perhaps? Or was she asking something entirely different? The wording left her to wonder, even as she pored over the shelf before her, frowning slightly as she noted a missing volume not held by Tojiko; she would have to check elsewhere for it…
Miko noted the slight deflation of her stature and guessed from the words following what it was caused by, but supposed it best to say nothing, instead simply offering a friendly smile as ever. “That’s quite fine by me, as well. I have plenty of time to spare today, in any case,” she replied. “Is there anywhere in particular you might want to go?” she asked.
“…there is no particular part of Gensokyo I desire to see… anywhere that is not the Village will do.” …indeed, anywhere but there. Far too many curious and prying eyes for the devil’s liking, even when she had glamered her appearance to that of a human. Yes, far too many eyes. “The decision is up to you, ultimately.”
“Hmm…this is fine.” Takumi said as she walked over to an open chair and sat down. “Besides, I get enough seclusion back home…”
“…Very well. I will remain nearby, then, in the event you need me.” By ‘nearby’, however, it seems she meant ‘within earshot but not within sight’, as she turned the corner ‘round one of the shelves to resume her work. Whatever that may be.
“Good day, devil”, the goddess greeted warmly.
In all honesty though, she was a bit worried the welcoming might’ve came off a bit rude given the title she used. Assistant maybe? Ah well.
“Not really, no. I’m mainly seeking a tome or two.”
“I see. If you would care to be more specific, I believe I can assist you in finding them. However, I cannot let them leave the library without Lady Patchouli’s permission, unfortunately.”
“Ah.. If you wish for assistance in indexing this place, allow mine self to help, and to see the books I have taken.” Tojiko began to rise slowly, lifting the pile of books she had left upon the table with both hands, turning about to look as somberly as she usually did at the devil. “‘Twould only be polite.”
The devil scanned the spines of the stack before gesturing for Tojiko to return to her business. “The gesture is appreciated. I will be sure not to concern myself over them if I note them missing while you are still here, then.”
“No, that is perfectly fine. I had not expected to find much except for mythology anyway. I am simply curious as to what all has been written about my kind. Though I can assume a great deal from my own experience, I lack the benefit of others of my kind to speak with.” Ran gave a somewhat morose shake of her head, a slight frown crossing her face. However, it soon faded away into a gentle smile. “If it is all right for me to borrow any materials that you have here, then I will return the favor by allowing yourself or Patchouli to interview me about anything that I know. You may take down as many notes as you like, should that payment be satisfactory to you.”
“Of course. The library’s materials are open to everyone, after all, it’s merely removing them from the library that requires Lady Patchouli’s permission. If you’ll follow me, what we have is this way.” So saying, she waved the kitsune to follow her; unfortunately, what lore they had on her kind was towards the back of the library, so they wouldn’t be reaching it for a little while. “As well, if you wish to be interviewed, myself or Lady Patchouli would be willing to take notes for further study. Although, Lady Patchouli will likely want a sample for her own records.”
Miko thought it odd that it would be necessary - or perhaps, possible - to get permission for such from a mistress who was seemingly absent, but said nothing of it. “There are few times when I have any specific obligations, nowadays. Quite a change from my old life, which was always rather busy… In any case, I’d be fine to do it any time, really. How soon would you want to do so?”
Koakuma stopped for a moment mid-thought as she realized her rather stupid mistake; Patchouli, after all, was still gone. The pair of headwings drooped slightly, as did her shoulders, both as she remembered that and mentally berated her for her mistake. “… nh. I will… leave a note in the event she returns in my absence. I… I am fine with leaving now, if you wish.”

“Lady Yakumo. Your visit is unexpected; are you here to discuss something with Lady Patchouli or the mistress?”
The ghost would chuckle softly at the request, had she the energy to do more than simply nod, floating a bit up and leaning back in the seat, still reading her book but now keeping an eye on the devil. “I shall be sure to replace every text where I had found it, you need not worry about that, milady. ‘Tis only common courtesy, even as I had entered without query..”
“Common courtesy, perhaps, but it is only recently that I have not taken stock of the library and found volumes missing.” Regardless, it was a little comforting to hear it, at least. While she didn’t exactly trust the ghost completely, she hadn’t acted out yet, at least. “If ever you require something, please call for me, and I will assist you in finding it.”
“Good day, Assistant.” Ran folded her arms in front of her and bowed to pay her respects to the demon with a light smile. It wasn’t really someone who she had spoken with much before, but she knew of Patchouli’s familiar rather well. “Something in the library… yes, I think so. I am simply curious to research whatever lore you have on kitsune here. Unfortunately I do not know much of my species from personal experience so I would like to find a little more about them.” It was kind of an embarrassing point, but she figured honesty would be best here.
“…We have some knowledge on the kitsune as a whole, though Lady Patchouli has had very, very little room to do research on them. Not many are known to us that exist in Gensokyo, and none of those very few have agreed to take part in furthering her studies. What little we have… may not be very useful in your search, but I will show you nonetheless.” With a slight wave, the devil rose but a few inches off the ground, floating her way between shelves and navigating the maze-like arrangement, knowing each section like the back of her hand. “I hope that you find some use of it. It is mostly a collection of tales and legends, though Lady Patchouli has written a few tomes on their general abilities and physiology.”

”.. Miss Sakuya. Is the change in dress for any particular reason, or are you simply feeling like an experiment tonight?”
